Strong signal for player protection: When can high losses from online gambling be reclaimed? In April 2025, the Thuringian Regional Court handed down an important ruling that is likely to be of great significance to many online gambling players: An internet sports betting provider was ordered to pay a player more than €10,000 in damages. The reason: The platform had disregarded the legal deposit limits – to the clear detriment of the player.
This ruling underlines that providers who violate player protection regulations can be held liable for losses.
What is the deposit limit?
Since the State Treaty on Gambling 2021 (GlüStV 2021) came into force, a clear limit applies to online players in Germany: a maximum of 1,000 euros may be deposited per month.
While there are exceptions – such as an individual increase of the limit to up to 10,000 euros – this is only possible under strict conditions:
- Submission of proof of income
- Proof of economic capacity
- documented testing by the provider
These regulations are intended to prevent gambling addiction and protect players from financial losses.
Case: Provider ignores limit – player gets money back
In the case at hand, the player had deposited substantial sums over an extended period – significantly more than legally permitted. The stipulated limit was exceeded, and no financial review was conducted.
The court concluded that the provider violated applicable law and breached its responsibilities as a provider.
As a result, the platform must compensate the player for his loss of over 10,000 euros.
The Thuringian ruling could have a significant impact on many other cases. This is because the obligation to adhere to the deposit limit applies to all providers – even those with a German license.
Anyone who has deposited more money than allowed in online gambling, or who has played far beyond the basic limit despite the lack of a credit check, should now have it checked whether there is a claim for reimbursement – not only in sports betting, but also in online casinos and virtual slot machines.
Lawyer István Cocron commented: “The Thuringian ruling clearly shows that players have a good chance of reclaiming their losses – even if the provider is officially licensed. As soon as the deposit limit has been exceeded, a legal review is worthwhile.”
Conclusion: Don’t simply accept losses – have your claims reviewed now.
Anyone who has deposited more than the permitted 1,000 euros per month into online gambling or has not checked their financial situation should take action.
The ruling from Thuringia shows that courts take player protection seriously – and enforce it even against large providers.
